I Hate My Generation Video

Feb. 21, 2022
By Ashley Altadonna

Earlier this year I released a collection of cover songs I did over the course of 2021. One of the tracks was by Canadian indie rockers Sloan, entitled "I Hate My Generation". Sloan is a band full of songwriters and singers. The track in question features members of the band taking turns lyrically within the verses. Since I was covering the track solo, I simply sang both parts and panned the vocals left and right.

When my friends at the PRF put out a call for videos for a virtual music fest, I wanted to contribute something and the idea of doing a visual duet with myself was too good to pass up. While the trick of using a split-screen to create doubles of an actor is nearly as old as cinema itself, I had never actually had the chance to try it. Though not technically complicated, (especially with digital editing software), shooting, and performing this by myself was trickier than I would've imagined.

I'm happy with how the final project turned out. I particularly enjoy the subtle irony of the line, "What could you both possibly share, other than the color of your hair?". I hope you enjoy it too.  For a great in-depth review of the history and evolution of the split-screen check out this video from Rocket Jump Film School.
