Nearly every major medical association has stated that gender-affirming care is routinely safe, but there is still confusion surrounding care options for transgender people, particularly in the case of puberty suppressing hormones. Misinformation often adds fuel to the fire of discriminatory legislation, and leads to transgender youth not receiving the support they deserve.

While not every transgender or non-binary person may want or need hormone replacement therapy to affirm their gender identity, it’s a safe bet that those who do (and their loved ones) have questions about it. Often these questions come from misunderstandings about the way hormones work, and what they can and can’t do.

In 2016, I interviewed my former professor Carl Bogner about the 31st Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival. Carl passed away on Sun. Dec. 15, 2024. I hope this interview shares what a brilliant, funny and compassionate person Carl was.

As an out trans person I have been frequently asked about the topic of transgender individuals in sports, and whether we might possess biological advantages. Like so many things involving human beings and our wide spectrum of biological differences, the best I can say is… it’s complicated.

I was asked if I would be interested in being the keynote speaker for my alma mater, the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee’s lavender graduation. I was incredibly honored to be asked, but I wasn’t initially sure I would be the best candidate for the job.
